Chargers RB Ryan Mathews paid some penance against the Chiefs, working in a more complementary role after a costly fumble last week in his season debut. The Pro Bowler had 10 carries for 60 yards with an eight-yard reception in the fourth quarter of a 37-20 win.
Coach Norv Turner said after the game he has “great trust” in Mathews.
For much of the game, he had a different way of showing it.
Mathews said he wasn't shocked about his reduced role after his fumble in Week 3, but fantasy owners probably were. Jackie Battle, who looks as if he's passed Curtis Brinkley and Ronnie Brown on the depth chart, got the start and played pretty well, scoring a rushing TD and a receiving TD. Mathews got fourth quarter action and finished with one less carry than Battle and more yards (15 to 14 and 39 to 61). Hopefully, this was a one-week message against a team the Chargers felt they could beat without Mathews' services. Next week, the Bolts go against the Saints.
