The Indianapolis Colts open the regular season Sept. 13, with or without Bob Sanders. Increasingly, it looks like they'll be without.
The veteran safety remains on the physically unable to perform list after undergoing surgery on his right knee, and neither coach Jim Caldwell nor president Bill Polian was prepared Wednesday to assert Sanders will be back in time for the opener.
"I'm not certain," Caldwell said. "I would say that if I felt that way. The most important thing is to get him healthy."
Added Polian on an afternoon radio show: "He's coming back during the regular season, and probably for the vast majority of it. The question is how fast is he progressing over the next four weeks, and it looks pretty good right now."
