Sam Darnold has a boot on his right foot and is not practicing. He’s in street clothes. On Monday, he said he was “fine” after admitting after the game he was “dinged up.”

Darnold isn't somebody you are looking to start in fantasy leagues anyway, but if he misses Week 10 against the Bills, backup Josh McCown may actually be better for Jets position players.

For the Jets to surround quarterback Sam Darnold with quality wide receivers next season and beyond, they probably will have to buy them in free agency. General manager Mike Maccagnan tried to build a pipeline at the position, but it all but dried up when they released former draft picks ArDarius Stewart and Chad Hansen in a span of 18 days. Stewart is back on the practice squad after clearing waivers, but his stock has taken a precipitous fall.

Quincy Enunwa, Jermaine Kearse, Terrelle Pryor and Andre Roberts will be unrestricted free agents after the season, meaning the Jets have the 2019 rights to only two of the six receivers on the 53-man roster: Robby Anderson (restricted free agent) and Charone Peake (special-teamer).

As the story said, in a perfect world, Stewart and Hansen—third- and fourth-round picks in 2017, respectively—would be ready to step into starting roles next season. That's how winning organizations operate. When they lose good players in free agency, they replace them with up-and-comers from previous drafts. It's the most cost-effective way to build a team under the salary cap. While the story doesn't expect that to happen, the good news is the Jets are expected to be about $90 million under the cap in 2019.

With Bridgewater traded to the Saints, McCown will now be the backup. This decision certainly wasn't a surprise as Darnold played very well in the preseason. Darnold is 28th on our QB list but is worth a stash in leagues where you can start multiple quarterbacks.

Teddy Bridgewater’s days with the Jets might be coming to end.

The Daily News has learned that at least two teams have expressed interest in trading for Bridgewater. The News reported two weeks ago that Gang Green has made it clear to teams across the league that they’re amenable to dealing the quarterback for the right price.

There have been no concrete offers as of yet but "many teams have inquired," the story said. The piece added Bridgewater has been impressive his first two preseason games, but it appears the Jets are going with Darnold to begin the season. The Jets see this as win-win: A chance to get something in return and a way to give Bridgwater a better opportunity. The story speculated the Broncos, Patriots and Dolphins could have interest in improving their backup QB position.

New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan offered his take Monday on the team's quarterback competition, gushing about rookie Sam Darnold and all but confirming he's open to trading Teddy Bridgewater.

Maccagnan, in an interview with New York radio station WFAN, said he's "exceptionally impressed" with Darnold, describing the former USC star as "unflappable."

These were the GM's first public comments on the three-way quarterback battle involving Darnold, Bridgewater and McCown, the story said. It's been speculated Jets higher-ups want to roll with Darnold while HC Todd Bowles may have been leaning toward one of the veteran QBs to win games and potentially save his job. Maccagnan pretty much confirmed in the story the team is open to trading one of the veteran QBs. It sure seems like Darnold is going to open the season as the Jets' starting QB.

Cimini said it seems obvious Darnold will start this week's preseason game based on all of his reps. He thinks the only way things change is if Darnold regresses against the Giants.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News expects Sam Darnold to be the Week 1 starter at quarterback. He stated it would "be an upset" for him to not start.

Josh McCown has been great for fantasy purposes, so this may not necessarily be a good thing for Jets skill players from that perspective. Still, it is likely the best long-term move for the Jets, who need to spark their franchise. No Jets quarterback is draftable right now in single-quarterback formats, but hopefully no matter who the starter is, they can continue to get the most out of wide receiver Robby Anderson.
