The Dolphins cut veteran kicker Caleb Sturgis and running back Mike Gillislee Saturday.
The Dolphins made 22 roster moves Saturday — they cut 20 players, terminated the contract of quarterback Josh Freeman, and waived/injured wide receiver Christion Jones.
Sturgis, the oft-injured kicker who struggled for two years, was probably the biggest name of the players cut, although his release wasn't a surprise.
The Dolphins will now go with a rookie kicker in Andrew Franks from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a rookie punter in Matt Darr, who attended Tennessee.
Sturgis was actually ranked eighth among our kickers this offseason, and was expected to put up fantasy points in what should be an improved Dolphins offense. Frank is now a borderline K1 option in his place.
