Patriots rookie WR Kenbrell Thompkins continues to impress and show a connection with Tom Brady.
Danny Amendola was sidelined with an undisclosed injury, so Thompkins became Brady’s go-to guy, catching six passes from the starting quarterback for 93 yards.
He later worked with backup Ryan Mallett, adding on two more catches as he finished the night with eight receptions for 116 yards. He was the top receiver for both teams.
“Since he got here, he’s been willing and eager to do whatever it takes and whatever the team asks of him,” Brady said of the undrafted rookie. “He made a lot of good plays down the field. We really needed that. He’s done a great job.”
Unfortunately, the Thompkins hype is going to get into full gear after his performance on Thursday night, but fantasy owners need to remember that 1) Danny Amendola was out, so Thompkins was seeing additional targets, and 2) it came against the Lions, who made Jordan Cameron a household name earlier in the preseason. We obviously like Thompkins (currently #45 in PPR and rising), but owners should be careful not to go overboard when drafting him.
