Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney spoke Friday about the foot injury suffered by quarterback Cam Newton, saying "Cam Newton has a mid-foot sprain in his left foot, and we are cautiously optimistic he will be ready for week one.", per Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic.
Newton exited Thursday’s game against the Patriots after three series. He was tackled by Patriots DT Danny Shelton which caused the injury. He later was spotted wearing a walking boot, but that was likely just for precautionary reasons. Former NFL team doctor David Chao shares some insight into the injury saying “Cam Newton in a walking boot. No crutches. By video, I did not see a major left foot injury. Often boot is precautionary for swelling overnight, especially when there is a flight home. No reason to panic with 2.5 weeks to opening game.” Newton should be considered questionable at best for Week 1 against the Rams but fortunately the injury does not seem serious.
