The Carolina Panthers will wait until after their August 19 preseason game against the Patriots to make a starting quarterback.
While many expected Baker Mayfield to simply be handed the starting job after the Panthers traded for the former Cleveland quarterback, the Panthers still seem to be giving Sam Darnold every opportunity to beat out Mayfield.
The timing for the decision comes in part because the Panthers will also have two joint practices with the Patriots before their preseason game. "The Patriots week is a true litmus test for us,” HC Matt Rhule said. “That will really show us where guys are."
Mayfield is currently our No. 26 quarterback and should still be the favorite to start against his former team in Week 1, but anything can happen.
