The Redskins placed running back Rob Kelley on injured reserve. He injured his toe in Sunday's loss to the Colts. This means Samaje Perine will be the third running back behind Adrian Peterson and Chris Thompson.

Kelley must stay on injured reserve for at least eight games.

Once he arrived in Arizona, Peterson carried the ball 129 times for 448 yards and 2 touchdowns. That works out to 3.5 yards per carry (YPC), which was well off his career 4.8 YPC average. He did get a major workload, garnering an average of 23.0 touches in six games with the Cardinals. Washington’s interest in signing a running back was obviously prompted by the injury to Derrius Guice, but it’s unclear where Peterson will fit on the team’s depth chart, at least initially. Will a 33-year-old Peterson be a better option than a 25-year-old Rob Kelly or a soon-to-be 23-year-old Samaje Perine? Time will tell, but at first glance, neither of the younger players impressed in 2017 and Peterson proved during his stint with the Cardinals that he could still carry the load, albeit inefficiently. He’s not much of a threat in the receiving game, so this signing should only impact Chris Thompson’s carries, not his catches. Thompson’s role should be relatively secure heading into the regular season.

Our rankings have been updated but Kelley, Peterson and Perine are all just speculative picks at this point until a frontrunner emerges.

The Skins hosted Jamaal Charles and Orleans Darkwa on Sunday and are looking to add running backs with all the injuries they are suffering, including to Perine and Marshall, who are dealing with ankle issues.

With Derrius Guice out for the season, Perine was in line to pick up a bigger load carrying the football. That may already be out the window depending on the severity of this injury. Rob Kelley will likely be the Redskins' early-down running back until further notice.

ESPN Redskins reporter John Keim wrote that coaches say both Rob Kelley and Samaje Perine are quicker and running with more confidence this summer, owing to their familiarity with the offense and perhaps shedding some weight (Kelley in particular). So Keim writes there is reason to believe both could be better.

The story also added that it's hard to know if the Skins will commit to either one as the lead back. Thompson is going to get plenty of work in the passing game, but as John Paulsen noted, in games when Thompson was healthy, other Redskins backs averaged about 16 touches per game.

In meeting rooms and on the field, Redskins RB Derrius Guice is showing his teammates and coaches what they were hoping to see. The guy who was the seventh running back chosen in the draft—and was considered the second-best one by some scouts—has been what Washington hoped. They understand who he is: A 21-year-old kid with boundless energy that sometimes must be harnessed a bit.

The story mentioned Guice is picking up protection calls quicker than coaches anticipated, which is a huge factor in keeping Guice on the field to become a full-time back. We already have Guice as the team's No. 1 RB on our depth chart, but keep in mind Thompson will still be a huge factor in the offense, especially the passing game, which will possibly limit Guice's fantasy value. But Guice has shown good hands, and in Thompson's nine healthy games last season, other RBs averaged just over 16 touches a game.
