After having his injured passing hand examined by two specialists, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has decided to have surgery Wednesday in Los Angeles, to be performed by Dr. Steven Shinn, he told ESPN's Ed Werder.
A timetable for his return won't be known until surgery is complete, a source said.
"I'm confident in the surgery that will take place and will dedicate myself to the rehab process to get back as quickly as I can," Brees told Werder in a text.
While there is no official timetable, a timeframe of six weeks has been floating around since Monday. If Brees misses the next six games, it takes him right up to the Saints bye in Week 9, essentially giving him an extra week, with a possible return in Week 10.
