San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis signed a five-year, $37 million extension with $23 million guaranteed on Saturday.
Davis' deal makes him the highest-paid tight end in NFL history.
Back in July, Antonio Gates signed a then-record five-year, $36.175 million deal with the San Diego Chargers that included $20 million in guaranteed money.
Gates is a six-time Pro Bowler, while Davis is coming off his first Pro Bowl appearance following a breakthrough season in 2009.
Last season, Davis led all tight ends with 13 touchdowns, with a team-leading 78 receptions for 965 yards.
Davis is set to earn $5.705 million this season in the final season of the five-year rookie deal he signed in 2006. He is now signed through 2015.
