Romo to resume role as holder

And the Cowboys' new holder is ... Tony Romo?

The Cowboys new holder may be its former holder. In an attempt to reverse the downward spiral of kicker Nick Folk, the Cowboys used Romo in Wednesday's practice. He replaced punter Mat McBriar, who has mishandled two recent field goal attempts.

"We feel like we need to do something, whether it's the whole operation itself or some of the parts," coach Wade Phillips said. "We've got to get more confidence from our kicker. We need to do better. There is a possibility that we'll make a change."

Romo served as the Cowboys' holder in 2005 and 2006. His bobble on Martin Gramatica's 19-yard field goal try with 1:19 left cost the Cowboys a playoff win against Seattle in January 2007. Backup quarterback Brad Johnson was the holder last season.

After making 20 of 22 field goal attempts last season, Folk has missed five of his last seven. McBriar blamed two of those on him placing the ball forward, away from Folk.
