Rex Ryan said he made the decision to start Kellen Clemens out of concern for quarterback Mark Sanchez’s health. The conspiracy theory is that the Jets coach made the move to teach the rookie a lesson.
Whatever the reason, Ryan announced Wednesday that veteran Kellen Clemens would start on Sunday at Tampa Bay in place of the injured Sanchez, who suffered a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a head-first slide in last Thursday night’s victory over the Bills at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
And the decision didn’t sit well with Sanchez.
‘‘He’s mad as a hornet at me,’’ said Ryan yesterday. ‘‘But again, that’s good. I was mad at him (for sliding). He’s mad at me. So we’re even.’’
