WR vs. CB Matchups to Exploit & Avoid in DFS: Week 5
When it comes to selecting receivers in DFS, it’s important to understand who will cover them, as sometimes defense versus position stats alone don't tell the whole story. In addition, there can many times be defensive injuries that will have a significant, and perhaps hidden, effect on a receiver's matchup. Below we'll take a deeper look at the matchups that should help in your WR decisions for Week 5.
Note: Any unlisted matchups -- especially those of prominent WRs -- should generally be considered a push.
Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers (Thursday)
Be cautious: The only receiver I want from Arizona is Larry Fitzgerald now that Carson Palmer is out. Drew Stanton will be under center. Fitzgerald will draw Keith Reaser from the slot, and he's allowing seven yards per target, however, isn't making very many plays on the ball. If you were to target anyone from the game, outside of David Johnson, it'd be Fitzgerald.
Avoid: Tyrann Mathieu and Patrick Peterson. The 49ers' receivers shouldn't be in consideration with these matchups, as Torrey Smith will draw Patrick Peterson, who's allowing five yards per target on 17 targets. Mathieu has been playing deep safety, but could spend more time in the slot this week with Tyvon branch out, rendering Jeremy Kerley unusable this week.
Washington Redskins at Baltimore Ravens
Exploit: It's Desean Jackson's turn to take advantage of Shareece Wright this week. Wright has been responsible for six touchdowns, and on 22 targets is allowing nearly eight yards per target and has been targeted an average of 15 yards downfield. To say Wright has struggled is an understatement, as he's yielding 0.63 fantasy points per route to WRs. I really like Jackson this week.
