Week 5 Essential NFL Practice News & Notes for Thursday
Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett (right thumb) took limited practice reps again Thursday.
Bears QB Jay Cutler (right thumb) missed practice again Thursday. HC John Fox said that Brian Hoyer has a chance to remain the starter even when Cutler comes back, so he’s likely going to continue to start until he has a bad performance or two.
Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (right shoulder) took limited practice reps again Thursday.
Colts QB Andrew Luck (right shoulder) was added to the injury report Thursday after taking limited practice reps. This is pretty typical for Luck this year.
Browns QB Josh McCown (left shoulder) missed practice again Thursday.
Panthers QB Cam Newton (concussion) missed practice Thursday. HC Ron Rivera said he’ll know Newton’s status by the end of the week (Saturday?). Newton plays on Monday night, so owners worried about his status should pick up Derek Anderson as a plan B. He doesn’t typically miss starts, but he can’t tough his way through a head injury. As for Anderson, his last two starts were in 2014 and they were both against the Buccaneers. (What are the odds?) He completed 49 of 74 passes (66.2%) for 507 yards (for a 6.85 YPA), three touchdowns and zero interceptions. In a good matchup, QB streamers could do much worse.
Jets QB Bryce Petty (right shoulder) missed practice again Thursday.
Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) missed practice again Thursday.
Broncos QB Trevor Siemian (left shoulder) returned to limited practice reps Thursday after missing Wednesday practice. HC Gary Kubiak said that he’s planning that Siemian will be available to start on Sunday and the return to practice is a good sign. If he can’t play, Paxton Lynch would get the start.
