Jets coach Todd Bowles said Tuesday that barring an injury to new starting quarterback Bryce Petty, rookie Christian Hackenberg won't play in 2017.
The 3-9 Jets are going with Petty, a second-year pro, over Ryan Fitzpatrick for the final four games of this brutal season, which hit its low point in Monday night's 41-10 loss to the Colts.
But Fitzpatrick, and not Hackenberg, will be the backup -- at least at first.
Fantasy Impact:
Bowles said Hackenberg simply hasn't received enough practice reps, while sitting behind Fitzpatrick and Petty on the depth chart, to be ready to play this year. And that's why Hackenberg is not the Jets' new backup quarterback.
