Perfect Draft: 10th in 12-Team Superflex MFL 0.5 PPR League
This installment of the Perfect Draft series is a bit different, as I get to play with my 4for4 co-workers instead of the Draft Hero computer drafters. Selecting among a crew of knowledgeable analysts may not be ideal in terms of “perfect” players available, but I’ll do my best to come out of it with my model roster. This league is a superflex best-ball format on MyFantasyLeague, with .5 PPR scoring. From the 10-hole, I’m open to seeing how the first round shakes out and could end up with a top WR, Aaron Rodgers if he falls or an RB like Melvin Gordon, Dalvin Cook or Leonard Fournette.

Draft Hero Settings
- Roster Settings: 1QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE, 2 regular Flex spots (RB/WR/TE), 1 Superflex (QB/RB/WR/TE). There are no kicker or defense spots.
- No Position Restrictions: In a superflex league that’s also best-ball, I want to see all options available to me every round. If a player is falling that I may not normally take, I want Draft Hero to inform me, so I can make the best possible choice at each pick.
- Heavier QB Percentage: In the general manager tab under draft strategy, I tweaked my optimal draft plan by pumping up the QB position by 10 percent. This lets the Draft Hero know I am putting more weight on the signal-callers in this draft since it is a superflex format.

Round 1, Pick 10 – RB Melvin Gordon, Chargers
I was close to taking Aaron Rodgers to kick this off but decided that since there are only two guys drafting until my next pick, there will still be an elite QB on the board in the second round. Gordon’s VBD is a +75, which is his value compared to the worst starter at the RB position. His score was the highest among every guy available, with the exception of Julio Jones.
Now that he has put together two back-to-back campaigns where he finished among the top 10 RBs in PPR points, Gordon is a safe first-rounder and one I’m on board with in 2018. In a superflex format, my next pick will most likely be a QB, since I have so much real estate until I get to select again.
Round 2, Pick 3 – QB Aaron Rodgers, Packers
I’m not sure why Anthony Amico chose Cam Newton over the consensus number one QB, although word is he just hates Rodgers—his loss is certainly my gain. Green Bay’s resident future Hall of Famer is projected to put up 334 fantasy points this season and I’m thrilled to have him on board at pick 2.03 in a superflex format. There were other routes I could have gone, as there were some juicy WRs still available like Michael Thomas and Keenan Allen, plus running backs Cook and Fournette.
In the end, I chose overall points and knew we’d be well into the second tier of QBs by the time I got to select again. In superflex leagues, you don’t want to be caught on the tail end of a QB run, as it could be extremely difficult to make up those points.
Round 3, Pick 10 – WR T.Y. Hilton, Colts
I knew I wanted to go WR here. It came down to Hilton and Doug Baldwin. Both are worthy of a roster spot in the third round, but I chose Hilton due to my personal disdain for a Brian Schottenheimer offense. I like Hilton’s upside this season, especially with a healthy Andrew Luck tossing the rock. He managed a WR5 campaign in 2017, racking up close to 1,000 receiving yards and four scores with Jacoby Brissett under center, so things are looking pretty rosy in Indy with a new coaching staff and their star QB back on the field.
My next pick could go in a number of different directions, but since I’m on the end, I need to be sure to not miss out on any crazy positional runs in round four. I could grab my QB2 for the flex spot or draft Zach Ertz if he’s still on the board.
Round 4, Pick 3 – TE Zach Ertz, Eagles
I considered both Alex Collins and Jay Ajayi, but Ertz won out in the end. His projected point total is less than 10 points lower than both RBs, along with Tyreek Hill, the top WR available. As the TE3 in .5 PPR points last season, Ertz posted 11.8 points per game and his 7.9 targets per contest checked in as the second-most among TEs in 2017.
With 18 players finding roster homes before my next turn, I’m gambling that there won’t be a massive QB run, but at least I have the top dog already on the squad if it were to go down. In the next two rounds, I’ll look for my RB2, QB2 or perhaps my WR2 depending on how the rest of my 4for4 co-workers draft.
