Shortly after announcing their 53-man roster, the Bengals traded cornerback David Jones to the Jaguars for safety Reggie Nelson. The Bengals original roster had six cornerbacks and three safeties.

After Gibril Wilson got injured in the Aug. 20 preseason game against Philadelphia, the Bengals were once again searching for a veteran fourth safety. They signed Marvin White and had former Dallas safety Chris Watkins in for a visit last Wednesday, but decided to make a deal for Nelson, a former first-round pick.

In his three years in Jacksonville, Nelson has 187 tackles, 20 passes defended and seven interceptions.

Jones was expendable after the Bengals signed Adam Jones during the offseason and the play of Morgan Trent last year. They would also like to develop rookie Brandon Ghee.
