2022 MLB Team Betting Preview & Best Odds: Toronto Blue Jays Futures

The Toronto Blue Jays finished the 2021 season 91-71, marking just the second time in the last 28 seasons they finished with 90+ wins. Unfortunately for them, this wasn’t quite enough to make the playoffs as both the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees finished the year 92-70. Led by MVP runner-up Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and top WAR position player Marcus Semien, the Blue Jays' offense was one of baseball’s best. They scored 5.22 runs/game and lead the MLB with 262 HR and a .797 OPS. Toronto’s pitching wasn’t too shabby either. Spearheaded by Cy Young award winner Robbie Ray (13-7, 2.84 ERA, 248 strikeouts), they gave up just 4.09 runs/game, had a team ERA of 3.91, and a WHIP of 1.231. They were oh so close to playing in late October. The future is bright for the lone Canadien team in the MLB. 2022 Projected Lineup

As previously mentioned, the Blue Jays were one of baseball’s top offensive teams in 2021. They suffered a major loss this off-season, however, losing 2021 WAR leader and late-career bloomer Marcus Semien to Texas in free agency. His departure left a giant hole in their lineup but the recent addition of Matt Chapman via trade with Oakland should help. Chapman had his “worst” offensive season to date in 2021, setting career lows in BA, SLG%, and OPS. He should see much more lineup protection in Toronto and the hope is he returns to pre-2021 form.

2022 Projected Rotation

Pitching wasn’t the team's best asset last year but did enough to keep them in the hunt. Toronto lost a major part of their rotation during free agency, as Cy Young winner Robbie Ray flew west and just south of the border to Seattle. The Blue Jays ironically signed former Mariner and fellow lefty Yusei Kikuchi and Kevin Gausman to replace Ray. Kikuchi is not the pitcher Ray is but he did set career bests in ERA (4.41), strikeouts (163), and K/9 (9.3) last season. Gausman is also coming off a career-best season: 14-6, 2.81 ERA, 227 strikeouts, and 1.042 WHIP in 192 innings. Losing a Cy Young winner definitely hurts, but these additions in concert with 2021 mid-season addition Jose Berrios and Hyun Jin Ryu give the Blue Jays one of the deepest rotations in the American League.
