Week 5 Fantasy Football Busts: 4 Players to Avoid
I got the general question last week, which helped me kick off this week’s list.
“How do you avoid a player ranked in the Top 12?”
Well, you can’t. Their ceiling potential can swing any matchup in your favor. Kyler Murray’s Week 4 outing is a perfect example.
Murray was on the list as his primary receiver had a tough matchup. Kliff Kingsbury had an epiphany and moved Marquise Brown into the slot (3-60-1 on five targets), but Murray was still 21st in EPA per play. However, as I mentioned, his rushing score moved him into the Top 12. Fantasy managers have to account for a player’s full range of outcomes.
The avoid list is a way to manage expectations. Not just for a single player, but for your entire roster. If you roster someone on the list, ensure your other starters have a higher ceiling to account for one dud. We can plan around almost anyone but benching a top option is a tough ask. Now, let’s get to this week’s candidates.
Quarterback
Matthew Stafford (Rams) vs. Dallas
Luckily, any drop in Stafford’s game doesn’t affect Cooper Kupp. So, managers rostering the WR1 are safe. But those with Stafford should at least consider a streaming option. I’ve got a few options. Either way, the matchup doesn’t favor the Rams’ passing attack overall.
