As if the Ravens didn't upgrade their passing game enough by landing speedy receiver Torrey Smith in the second round, they got a complementary receiver in Tandon Doss in the fourth. If Doss does in the NFL what he did for Indiana, that combination may be on the receiving end of Joe Flacco throws for years.
While Smith has the ability to stretch a defense and invoke the "vertical" passing game, Doss has the ability to make plays in the intermediate range and across the middle of the field. He was the go-to player on offense at Indiana, where he caught the ball, ran the ball, was featured in the Wildcat formation and even returned 66 kickoffs in his college career.
Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said he expects Smith and Doss to be on the field at the same time this season.
"Torrey has very good speed," Newsome said. "He was clocked in under 4.4 at the combine, so he has a vertical presence. Tandon has an inside presence. He's a very smart kid. He played all five positions, lined up at quarterback in the Wildcat at Indiana.
"The two strengths they bring to the table are something we need on the offense, and those strengths are going to allow them to get on the field very, very early."
