Before defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth could get to training camp and take his conditioning test, the Washington Redskins traded him to the New England Patriots for a fifth-round draft pick in 2013, according to league sources.
Haynesworth still must pass his physical, as any player in any trade would, for the trade with the Patriots to take effect.
At first glance the Patriots 3-4 defense seems like an odd fit for Haynesworth, who essentially quit on the Redskins the moment they moved to a similar scheme. The Patriots also seem set at the nose, with Vince Wilfork filling the spot. Bill Belichick must think he can motivate Haynesworth in a way that Mike Shannahan simply couldn't, and for a 2013 5th round pick the price was right to try. The Redskins have already paid off the worst of Albert's record setting $100m deal signed in 2009.
Adding Haynesworth only helps to solidify our top 5 fantasy ranking of the Patriots DEF, a squad that improved significantly throughout the 2010 season. They are a good value pick if you want a top defense but don't want to pay the price for the Steelers or Packers.
