As if there was any doubt, Alex Smith earned coach Jim Harbaugh’s official nod as the 49ers’ opening-day starting quarterback. Smith led the 49ers to touchdowns on their first two possessions in Thursday’s 20-17 win at San Diego, closing out the 49ers’ 2-2 exhibition season.
Asked if it’s finally time to name Smith his starter, Harbaugh replied: “I’m pretty sure we can say that. … He played (Thursday) with a very cool head and made good decisions. He played the way you want him to out there — calm, cool, collected.”
Saying that he's "pretty sure" about something isn't exactly a ringing endorsement. If Smith and/or the 49ers struggle this season, don't be surprised if Harbaugh runs Colin Kaepernick out there to give the rookie some experience (and perhaps give the 49ers a better shot at Harbaugh's QB at Stanford Andrew Luck in the 2012 NFL Draft).
