As he moves into his third NFL season, Denver Broncos running back Jeremiah Johnson is about to get his first gameday uniform.

With running back Knowshon Moreno not expected to play Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals because of a strained hamstring, the Broncos’ coaching staff has informed Johnson that he will be promoted from the practice squad to the active roster.

After rushing for 30 touchdowns in four seasons at Oregon, Johnson went to training camp with Houston as a rookie in 2009 and spent time on practice squads with Washington, Carolina and Denver before he finally got the call.

Willis McGahee is expected to be the Broncos’ starting tailback and get the bulk of the rushing workload with Lance Ball filling the No. 2 tailback role.

But Ball’s single-game high is 15 carries and McGahee hasn’t received more than 16 carries since a 2008 playoff game against Pittsburgh so Johnson may get a handoff or two.
