Monday was TE Antonio Gates first practice since before the Chargers Sept. 18 game at New England. He left that game in the fourth quarter after re-tearing scar tissue in his foot. It is the tearing of the scar tissue and accompanying pain as he recovers from plantar fasciitis that hasn’t allowed him to play the past three weeks.
While hoping for what he called “a miracle” that would allow him to return sooner, it has long been in the back of Gates’ mind that he would play again when the Chargers play the New York Jets.
No one is making any pronouncements, but that game is Sunday.
“We have a long week,” Gates said after Monday’s practice. “I didn’t go out there to make any assessments on playing on Sunday. I went out there to give myself some type of confidence, being back involved, and participating … I didn’t go out there to say I’m going to play on Sunday. I just wanted to see exactly what I can do and what I couldn’t do and just take it one day at a time.”
