Among the most intriguing sights of the Dolphins' offseason work was watching 6-4 Ernest Wilford confuse the defense and create mismatches as a tight end. The question is, can he make the team in his new jack-of-all-trades role? Wilford, who had just three receptions for Miami last year after catching 45 passes for Jacksonville in 2007, is excited about his reincarnation.
The Dolphins initially considered releasing Wilford -- a year after giving him a four-year, $13 million deal -- but that would have cost more against the cap. Instead, Miami added tight end and H-back to his duties. Wilford, inactive for nine games last year, said last week that he also played some receiver in minicamp and was not told if he will move exclusively to tight end.
Wilford, 30, could double as the sixth receiver and third tight end if he sticks. Joey Haynos, John Nalbone and Jared Bronson also are competing at tight end behind Anthony Fasano and David Martin (who is returning from sports hernia surgery).
