Giants WR Hakeem Nicks struggled when he tried to run in Wednesday morning’s walk-through in New Jersey. Nicks did not have a setback, according to two people with knowledge of his condition, but the soreness in his foot was too much to overcome on a short week. Those people requested anonymity because Coughlin prefers to provide official injury updates. The Giants will have a 10-day layoff after tonight before playing at Philadelphia on Sept. 30.
Nicks has said the pain management will be ongoing for at least the early part of the season. Last week, he only practiced on Thursday to be able to play Sunday. His foot was clearly aggravated against Tampa Bay, when safety Mark Barron accidentally stepped on it at the end of a play, but Nicks only came off for one play after writhing in pain on the field.
Nicks owners should feel somewhat comforted by the fact that he did not have a setback and that this is simply a pain management that can't be taken care of during a short week. With Nicks out, Ramses Barden should act as the Giants' WR2 with Rueben Randle getting an opportunity to play 40+ snaps as the team's WR3.
