Ryan Mathews did about everything Sunday night but start, pacing the Chargers with 12 carries for 80 yards and his first touchdown of the season. He added a team-high six catches for 59 yards.
“I felt good,” Mathews said. “My line and my fullback and my receivers and tight end, everyone was just doing a good job blocking downfield. It just sucks. You really want to enjoy all that other stuff you do in the game, but it just feels like it's for nothing.”
“Ryan played really well,” Turner said. “He played physical. He played fast. He did a good job when he was in there and with the (pass) protection part. I think he's doing the things we need him to do.”
Even though Jackie Battle started, he quickly gave way to Mathews, especially once he started to produce. Ronnie Brown also saw action on third downs. Those trends are likely to continue, but clearly Mathews is the guy to start.
