Defensive Team By Waiver Wire (DTBWW): Week 7
For those of you new to Defensive Team By Waiver Wire (DTBWW), the strategy goes like this: Each week, you target a mediocre defense on the waiver wire, looking for a good matchup, preferably at home. You will typically get good defensive production without having to burn a semi-valuable pick on draft day. Or if you do draft a DT and they start to disappoint, you can use DTBWW the rest of the way.
I have been writing this feature for three years and in 2009, my top three weekly picks averaged DT5 numbers. In 2010, they averaged DT6 numbers. Last year, they averaged DT7 numbers. So the system works pretty well.
Generally, defenses have to be available on the waiver wire in at least 40% of ESPN fantasy leagues to be eligible. This ensures that we are talking about defenses that are readily available.
Let's see how we did last week:
1. Cardinals (10 fantasy points, DT9)
2. Buccaneers (14 fp, DT8)
3. Bengals (4 fp, DT21)
4. Patriots (6 fp, DT17)
5. Browns (16 fp, DT4)
6. Dolphins (9 fp, DT10)
7. Rams (6 fp, DT17)
Many DTBWW followers still have the Cardinals (picking them up in Week 3), and I recommended last week that owners stick with them even though they weren't technically eligible since they are owned in more than 60% of ESPN fantasy leagues. The Buccaneers were good as expected against the Chiefs. The Browns and Dolphins were also excellent and solid, respectively.
Let's take a look at Week 7:
While I'm going to stop listing the Cardinals as one of my official picks, they are worth sticking with against the Vikings in Week 7. They have a great Week 15-16 schedule against the Lions and Bears, and both games are at home, so they are a worthwhile hold for the stretch run even if their upcoming schedule is getting a little tougher.
Patriots (vs. NYJ)
The Colts are the #28 fantasy defense, so let's not read too much into the Jets' reasonably solid offensive performance in Week 6. The Pats are coming home after a tough loss and the defense should respond.
