The Chiefs aren’t getting what they need from Dexter McCluster as their slot receiver.

McCluster has twice deflected an easily catchable pass, leading to an interception that was returned for a touchdown. In another instance, McCluster fumbled without being hit and the opponent recovered, setting up a touchdown.

The Chiefs might be able to overlook some of these errors if McCluster delivered some big plays along with them, but he hasn’t. McCluster is small enough that he isn’t much of a target downfield, and he hasn’t been as much of a matchup problem for opposing defenses as the Chiefs had hoped on short and intermediate routes.

The Chiefs drafted Devon Wylie this year in hopes he could provide some job competition for McCluster. But Wylie has been plagued with one nagging injury after another so that competition never materialized.
