Rams HC Jeff Fisher told Jim Rome that versatile WR Tavon Austin will do all kinds of things in the Rams’ offense this season, but there’s no way the Rams are going to give opposing defensive coordinators a look at those things before the games count.
“We have a pretty good idea but we haven’t shown it yet,” Fisher said. “He’s not had a lot of production in the preseason, only because it makes sense to hold those types of things for the regular season.”
Austin returned two punts last week, one for 81 yards and one for 23 yards, and Fisher said those plays were a hint of how much of a threat Austin can be in the open field.
Austin ranks 44th among our receivers in standard, but jumps to 36th in PPR. A look at his standard ADP tells a lot about the hype. Austin is going in the 8th round, which is three, four rounds earlier than just about everyone around him in our rankings (Sidney Rice, Emmanuel Sanders to name two). While there is reason to be excited, it can also be a warning to temper expectations a bit.
