Geno Smith may be the Jets starting quarterback against Darrelle Revis and the Bucs, but there is no guarantee he’ll be starting anything beyond that. The Jets unleashed their triple threat Wednesday -- Rex Ryan, GM John Idzik and owner Woody Johnson -- and from every angle they made it clear that the competition is continuing into the regular season.

“We’ll always put the best player we can on the field on Sunday, and that will continue,” Johnson said. “The competition’s ongoing.”

“Competition is our mantra,” Idzik said. “It’s really a mindset with us. “Competition will always be ongoing, no matter where you are on the roster.”

Ryan was asked if the starting quarterback position was going to evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

“Our focus is strictly on this game,” Ryan said. “So whether week-to-week, I don’t know what the heck, we’re not thinking past Tampa. This whole team is not thinking past Tampa in anything.”

Fantasy Impact:

This sounds like 'coachspeak' meant to let the rookie Smith know that the job isn't being handed to him. Barring a disaster, it would be surprising if the Jets turned back to Sanchez after their QB of the future gets a few starts under his belt. Mark Sanchez will sit out Week 1 (and beyond) with a shoulder injury.
