Trent Richardson's demotion this week did little to promote the idea that he is the Indianapolis Colts' future at running back.

But despite all the intensifying chatter on Richardson and his struggles since his much-debated September trade from the Cleveland Browns to the Colts, the team would argue one important angle has been overlooked.

Richardson's lack of success in the short term actually has little impact on the Colts' view of him in the long term. Put simply, the Colts made the trade to fill a current need, but also because they saw it as a deal that helps them in the future, when they believe Richardson can be better integrated into their offense.

Fantasy Impact:

As the story points out, the Colts dropping Richardson on the depth chart is not tantamount to the team making assumptions about tomorrow. They stand behind the decision to start Donald Brown on Sunday; even Richardson said it was the right call. It will be tough for owners in keeper leagues to protect Richardson and his stock going into next year could fall. But, he'll be a guy to take a shot on outside of the first round.
