Waiver Wire Watch: Week 10

Editor’s Note: We’re happy to announce that 4for4 Contributor Pat Fitzmaurice (formerly of Pro Football Weekly) is back on the Waiver Wire Watch this year. He will continue to work in conjunction with Senior Editor John Paulsen to compile this list of the top pickups each week.

Here is a look at the top waiver wire pickups for Week 10. To be eligible for discussion, the player must be owned in 50% or fewer Yahoo leagues, though we’ll stretch the rules a bit for the RB position, which is usually very thin. We’ll also include suggested bid prices (with a $100 budget) for those leagues that use Free Agent Acquisition Budgets. Of course, player value depends on league characteristics and team needs. Players are listed by position in order of importance. For extremely shallow or extremely deep leagues, be sure to review our Rest-of-Season Rankings (updated every Tuesday) to get an idea of how to value players not on this list.

Redskins QB Robert Griffin III* ($9)

RG3 showed some rust in his first game back from a dislocated ankle but turned in a respectable performance overall, completing 18-of-28 passes for 251 yards, with one TD and one INT, and rushing seven times for 24 yards. He’ll emerge from a Week 10 bye to find a primo Week 10 matchup against the Buccaneers, who have allowed 18 TD passes through eight games and are giving up just under 300 passing yards per contest. RG3 has a favorable schedule the rest of the way and rates as a solid QB2 or streaming option.

Eagles QB Mark Sanchez ($8)

With Nick Foles sustaining a broken collarbone on Sunday, the Eagles will have to roll with Sanchez for the foreseeable future. Will we see the incompetent butt-fumbler whose stay with the Jets ended so poorly, or a competent veteran whose confidence has been rebuilt by offensive guru Chip Kelly? After Foles went down against the Texans, Sanchez completed 15-of-22 attempts for 202 yards, with two TDs and two INTs. This week brings a favorable matchup against the Panthers, and Sanchez has an able cast of pass catchers to work with – which was hardly the case during most of his tenure with the Jets. It isn’t easy to erase the mental image of the butt-fumble, but wise fantasy owners will grant Sanchez a clean slate and remain open to the possibility that he can provide short-term help.

Buccaneers QB Mike Glennon* ($7)

Glennon has a scrumptious schedule over the next three weeks, with the Falcons, Redskins and Bears presenting a series of cupcake matchups. The lanky quarterback has thrown for 249 or more yards in four of his six starts this season and has 10 TD passes. The Buccaneers’ WR tandem of Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans has a good chance of overpowering the cornerbacks they’ll be facing in the coming weeks, so Glennon is a recommended short-term play for QB streamers.

Bills QB Kyle Orton* ($3)

I’m not sure how you feel about it, but we at 4for4 miss Orton’s neck-beard. That said, we acknowledge that Orton has actually been a more formidable quarterback without the neck-beard. (Maybe he simply feels more comfortable without facial irritation.) Orton has averaged 282 passing yards per game over his four starts and his nine TD passes. However, he won’t be an attractive option for QB streamers over the next two weeks as he contends with a couple of statistically unfavorable matchups, first with the Chiefs, then with the Dolphins, who just embarrassed Philip Rivers.
