Alfred Morris started the game at running back and led the unit with 34 snaps, but he didn’t finish the game with the most carries for the Redskins.
Rookie running back Matt Jones led the team with 19 carries for 123 yards and two touchdowns, while Morris finished with 18 rushes for 59 yards. Each running back received 10 rushing attempts in the second half, with Jones racking up 43 yards and Morris gaining just seven.
The increased workload for Jones didn’t faze Morris after the 24-10 win over the Rams on Sunday at FedEx Field, however.
“We don’t care,” Morris said. “The only thing that matters around here is winning. The last two years we’ve had seven wins. That’s not going to get it done. That’s tough. I don’t care who gets the stats or who is making the plays. As long as we’re winning, that’s all that matters. That’s what we did today. We came out with a win. I’m super happy, super excited and I can sleep easy tonight knowing that we left it all out there and got a win today.”
For the time being, however, there are enough carries to go around in this offense, as we saw in Week 2. Head coach Jay Gruden said the amount of carries will change on a weekly basis between Morris and Jones.
In the same game Morris became the fifth-leading rusher in franchise history (passing Terry Allen, who had 4,096 rushing yards with the Redskins), there are already questions surrounding his future with the team. Morris will be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, and he already racked up 919 career rushing attempts through 50 games over the past four seasons. Jones had a nice camp and was a noticeable hard runner on top of being expected to catch passes. Jones looks like he's going to be worth grabbing off the waiver wire. Morris carried the load in a Week 1 loss, but it looks like we might be seeing more of Jones.
