Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown, who hurt his right foot Sunday against Tampa Bay, will not play Thursday night at Carolina, the team said today.

The team did not disclose the exact nature of the injury but said Brown will see a foot specialist for further evaluation.

Veteran Ricky Williams will take over as the No. 1 back for the match-up of two 4-5 teams at 8:20 p.m. Thursday (NFL Network).

Brown said Monday night on WQAM-560 that X-rays showed no break. But Brown said he had soreness and swelling caused when someone stepped on his foot.

Coach Tony Sparano had said Monday that if Brown could not play, there would be no concern about shifting the burden to Williams, who has split carries with Brown this season.

Sparano said Williams could handle the direct snaps in the Wildcat formation, a role usually held by Brown.

Sparano said rookie Lex Hilliard also would have to be "ready to carry the ball," as would fullback Lousaka Polite.
