Melvin Gordon benched for fumbles

There’s a long history of running backs finding their way to the bench because they couldn’t hold onto the football and Chargers rookie Melvin Gordon joined the list on Sunday.

Gordon had two fumbles in the first five weeks of the season and lost the ball twice in the first half against Green Bay. The Packers recovered the second one, at which point coach Mike McCoy made the decision to put Gordon on the bench for the duration of the contest.

“Today was solely on me,” Gordon said, via U-T San Diego. “It was my fault. I can’t blame anybody but myself.”

Fantasy Impact:

McCoy said after the game that Gordon has “to eliminate that” moving forward and the good news for Gordon is that there are many backs who have struggled with fumbles early in their careers before licking the problem. As a first-round pick, Gordon’s going to continue to get opportunities to show he can join that list as well. Gordon was showing signs of a possible breakout and was heavily involved in the passing game in Week 5 so many thought Week 6 was going to be it. Branden Oliver had more work as a result and Danny Woodhead continued to be involved as well.
