Scouting report

DEN TE Adam Trautman - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Washington Commanders
Adam Trautman was expected to mostly serve as a blocking tight end for Sean Payton in Denver, but he saw five targets in Week 1 and caught all of them for 34 scoreless yards. The kicker is Greg Dulcich exited this past Sunday's game with a hamstring injury and he is expected to miss multiple games. Dulcich's injury will likely thrust Trautman into a near every-down role for the Broncos. That being said, Trautman still does not project for a fantasy-friendly target share and the Denver offense fell off a cliff after halftime in Week 1. Trautman may work as a fantasy starter in very deep leagues, but in the majority of formats he still belongs on waivers.

NO TE Adam Trautman - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs Eagles

In terms of our matchup rankings versus tight ends, the easiest matchup of the week belongs to Adam Trautman. Is this the week Trautman finally cracks 50 yards in a game? Incredibly, he's also looking for his first touchdown of the season too. Let's make a bold prediction and say both of those things happen this week against the Eagles.

NO TE Adam Trautman - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs Titans

Adam Trautman had his best game of the season last week against the Falcons. Sure it was only 47 yards, but hey, we're trying to stay positive here. He also had a season-high seven targets. Juwan Johnson was a surprise inactive last week so it will be interesting to see if it happens again. Trautman just makes our top 25 half-PPR kickers this week at No. 23.

NO TE Adam Trautman - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs Falcons

The box score will say two catches for four yards for Adam Trautman against the Buccaneers, but he played, by far, the most snaps among the Saints' TEs last week with 66, compared to 27 for Garrett Griffin and 17 for Juwan Johnson. With Taysom Hill likely taking away goal-line work, all the Saints' TEs will likely be limited going forward, but if we're choosing one, it's Trautman. Fun fact: Saints' TEs have combined for three touchdowns this season. All three have been from Johnson and two of them were in Week 1. Take that how you will.

NO TE Adam Trautman - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Panthers

Adam Trautman was by far the most-used tight end for the Saints in Week 1, seeing 51 offensive snaps compared to 17 for Garrett Griffin and 12 for Juwan Johnson. However, it was Johnson catching two touchdown passes in Week 1 while Trautman came away with just the 18 yards on three catches. Trautman was the most-targeted receiver for the Saints in Week 1, so clearly, the Saints are going to use him, giving him upside at the position. For now, he's a streamable TE2 as Johnson seems to be limiting that upside for Trautman for the time being.

NO TE Adam Trautman - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Adam Trautman saw very limited time in 2020, but he showed a lot of promise in that short time. He caught 15 of his 16 targets for 171 yards and a touchdown. Jared Cook was the main tight end in New Orleans for a few years. Cook is now a Charger, meaning the TE1 role in New Orleans is all for Trautman and he is ready to burst onto the scene, especially early on with Michael Thomas sidelined as he recovers from ankle surgery.

Fantasy Downside

As with the rest of the Saints' skill position players. not having Drew Brees will sting a bit. How he connects with Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill early on will be very telling. The Saints may also be looking to run the ball more, and even in the passing game, Trautman will still be behind Alvin Kamara in the pecking order.

2021 Bottom Line

Trautman is a very popular sleeper tight end in fantasy circles this year. He's also very cheap in drafts. with an ADP near the 14th round. It's a small price to pay for a tight end that could become an early favorite in the Saints' offense.
