Fantasy Upside
The lead up to Alexander Mattison’s rookie year was met with some optimism as his workhorse build and workload at Boise State made him an ideal committee back for the oft-injured Dalvin Cook. Unfortunately, Mattison never was able to supplant Cook, as the latter was one of the heaviest used RBs last season. However, in the limited action Mattison did see, he was able to produce to an average of 7.69 fantasy points per game, including four games that saw him get double-digit carries. The coaching staff’s confidence to give Mattison the ball last year is crucial for the upcoming season as Cook’s contract status points to him holding out—instantly making Mattison one of the most valuable backs in fantasy.
Fantasy Downside
For all the potential Mattison could have in a primary back role, he is still the direct backup to one of the best RBs in the league. It’s possible new offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak utilizes Mattison in the passing game, however, that doesn’t make him entirely valuable. Even in a backup or passing-down role, Mattison doesn’t possess any special athletic traits that would translate into heavy usage. Not bearing any holdout or injury to Cook, Mattison’s role should remain wholly unchanged.
2020 Bottom Line
Mattison has emerged as one of the most valuable backups to own in fantasy football given both Dalvin Cook’s injury history and contact situation. We have Mattison ranked 46th amongst running backs and his current ADP in 12-team leagues has him going in the backend of the 12th round. Mattison is worthwhile for teams implementing zero RB, however, he’s most valuable as a handcuff for Cook owners.
