Scouting report

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Seattle

Mattison scored his first rushing touchdown of the season as he ran for 17 yards on seven carries against Houston last week. Mattison got a few touches and even cultured a Dalvin Cook touchdown in a day where Cook scored twice and ran again ran for 100 yards. Keep Mattison strictly as a handcuff to Cook.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Tennessee

Mattison finished Week 2 with three rushes for 13 yards and one reception for three yards. Mattison will have weeks where he’ll compile a few more yards, but he doesn’t have any standalone value behind one of the league’s true workhorses. Keep Mattison on your bench for Week 3.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Indianapolis

In a curious turn of events, Mattison was easily Minnesota’s most efficient back in Week 1 as he finished the game with six carries for 50 yards and caught all his four targets for 30 yards. Considering Dalvin Cook just received a massive extension, we didn’t expect to Mattison as much as we did on Sunday, however without many strong receiving options behind Adam Thielen, this might be a new norm for the Viking offense. Mattison has standalone appeal as a FLEX option in this Week 2 matchup against the Colts and will be a season-long lottery ticket is Cook were down miss any time.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Green Bay

Mattison had spotty usage in his rookie season but considering the Vikings have fully committed to a heavy rushing offense, there might be some more carries to go around. Mattison averaged 7.69 fantasy points last season, however it would be difficult to predict him being anything more than a direct backup to Dalvin Cook. Treat Mattison as a RB4 for Week 1 and keep him on your bench.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

The lead up to Alexander Mattison’s rookie year was met with some optimism as his workhorse build and workload at Boise State made him an ideal committee back for the oft-injured Dalvin Cook. Unfortunately, Mattison never was able to supplant Cook, as the latter was one of the heaviest used RBs last season. However, in the limited action Mattison did see, he was able to produce to an average of 7.69 fantasy points per game, including four games that saw him get double-digit carries. The coaching staff’s confidence to give Mattison the ball last year is crucial for the upcoming season as Cook’s contract status points to him holding out—instantly making Mattison one of the most valuable backs in fantasy.

Fantasy Downside

For all the potential Mattison could have in a primary back role, he is still the direct backup to one of the best RBs in the league. It’s possible new offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak utilizes Mattison in the passing game, however, that doesn’t make him entirely valuable. Even in a backup or passing-down role, Mattison doesn’t possess any special athletic traits that would translate into heavy usage. Not bearing any holdout or injury to Cook, Mattison’s role should remain wholly unchanged.

2020 Bottom Line

Mattison has emerged as one of the most valuable backups to own in fantasy football given both Dalvin Cook’s injury history and contact situation. We have Mattison ranked 46th amongst running backs and his current ADP in 12-team leagues has him going in the backend of the 12th round. Mattison is worthwhile for teams implementing zero RB, however, he’s most valuable as a handcuff for Cook owners.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Los Angeles Chargers

Alexander Mattison saw increased usage last week, rushing 14 times for 46 yards and catching two passes for 18 yards. We expect some of that was due to the fact Dalvin Cook was hurt coming in, and Minnesota wanted to lighten his load a bit. As for this week, Mattison hasn't practiced due to ankle injury and could be inactive. Even if he does play, he has little value behind Cook. He should be rostered as a handcuff, but not put in lineups.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Detroit Lions

Alexander Mattison could see an increase in playing time this week as Dalvin Cook deals with a chest injury. We expect Cook to be active, but if the game gets one-sided, Mattison could play more as Minnesota rests its star player. We could see Mattison getting double-digit touches this week, which could make him an RB3 or flex option in a great matchup against the Lions.
