Washington is addressing its tight end deficit by signing a guy well-known to coach Jay Gruden.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Washington is signing former Bengals tight end Alexander Smith, who hasn’t caught a pass in the NFL in two years.

Smith had a brief stint in Saints camp this summer, but was cut after just nine days.

Bengals tight end Jermaine Gresham is going to get a second opinion on the injured toe that caused him to miss Sunday’s win over the Browns.

Fantasy Impact: 

The Bengals ran the ball well enough yesterday it might not matter, but they need Gresham on board if they are to make a playoff run. With Tyler Eifert on IR, he’s their main receiving threat at the position. Kevin Brock and Alexander Smith are next up on the depth chart.

Cincinnati Bengals tight end Tyler Eifert's breakout season is on hiatus.

Eifert was forced from Sunday's season-opening 23-16 win versus the Baltimore Ravens after landing awkwardly on his arm in the first quarter. It appeared that Eifert dislocated his elbow on the play.

He was immediately sent to the locker room and did not return. Prior to the injury, Eifert was leading the Bengals' aerial attack with three catches for 37 yards in 12 minutes of action.

NFL Media's Albert Breer reports, per a Bengals source, that the team believes the pass-catching tight end dislocated his elbow, likely sidelining him for an extended period.

Fantasy Impact: 

Jay Glazer is reporting the hope is Eifert only misses a few weeks. With WR Marvin Jones also injured, the Bengals will have to lean heavily on WR Mohamed Sanu and RB Giovani Bernard in the passing game. Jermaine Gresham and Alexander Smith are next in line at TE with Gresham likely the guy to get a bulk of the work.

Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (neck, doubtful) missed practice all week and is doubtful for Week 17. Eifert’s stinger is likely to keep him out of Week 17. Jermaine Gresham (hamstring, questionable) missed practice again Friday and is questionable for Week 17. Gresham gets a bump if he can play, but he’s banged up as well. Alexander Smith is next on the depth chart.
