Scouting report

by Bill Riccette

TB TE Cade Otton - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at New Orleans Saints

Cade Otton has three straight games with at least 40 receiving yards. He did only see four targets in Week 5 but Baker Mayfield only threw the ball 24 times. He could see more targets against the Saints but is the 3rd option in the passing game, at best, maybe even 4th at times. He's a deeper TE option only.

TB TE Cade Otton - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Atlanta Falcons

Cade Otton has become a serviceable third option for Baker Mayfield, catching 13 passes over the last two weeks and averaging about 50 yards per game. The Falcons do present a tough matchup for Otton, as they have been one of the better defenses against opposing fantasy tight ends through four weeks, allowing just 7.5 points per game. But with Otton getting more attention from Mayfield, he has played his way into consideration as a starting option in fantasy lineups.

TB TE Cade Otton - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Cade Otton had, by far, his best fantasy performance of the season with 47 yards on seven catches in last week's loss to the Broncos. The caveat is that Otton likely saw a bump in looks due to Patrick Surtain covering Mike Evans. The Eagles don't have Patrick Surtain so Evans should be involved more again, meaning less targets for Otton. Otton remains a deeper-league option against the Eagles.

TB TE Cade Otton - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Detroit Lions

Cade Otton had just one catch for five yards and was targeted only twice in Week 1. The good news is the Lions, at least last season, were a favorable matchup for opposing tight ends in fantasy, so perhaps there's hope for a bounceback in Week 2 for Cade Otton. Until we see that, Otton is a TE2 option.

TB TE Cade Otton - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Usually, the best ability for a player is availability. As our John Paulsen notes, Cade Otton has played in 33 of a possible 34 games and played 96% of the snaps in 2023. He didn't play fewer than 91% of snaps in a single game and had three games in which he played every single offensive snap. If anything, Otton is on the field for the Bucs.

Fantasy Downside

The bad news is that, despite always being on the field, it hasn't equaled fantasy success. Otton caught 47 passes for 455 yards and four touchdowns in 2023. He was TE19 last season and 24th in points per game among tight ends. The volume just hasn't been there for Otton.

2024 Bottom Line

Otton can be a serviceable TE2 in fantasy circles, but until we see more from him on offense, that's all he's going to be for the time being.

TB TE Cade Otton - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs New Orleans Saints

Cade Otton only caught one pass for seven yards on his lone target last week. Otton has now finished with two catches or less in four straight games while averaging 16.8 yards per game in that stretch. He gets a favorable matchup this week vs. the Saints (29th aFPA), but he'll be a risky option considering his recent production. We'd likely look elsewhere for your TE needs this week.

TB TE Cade Otton - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Cade Otton finished with two catches for 44 yards last week. Otton has been OK this season, averaging 29.1 yards per game. Otton is hard to trust though as he hasn't had many highs, but has had plenty of lows. We wouldn't trust him in Week 16 despite a favorable matchup vs. the Jaguars (26th aFPA).
