LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Atlanta Falcons

After Week 1 it is clear that Cam Akers is well behind Darrell Henderson in the pecking order in Los Angeles. Henderson out-touched Akers 18-3 and saw all five targets in the passing game. Akers didn’t do much with his opportunities, rushing for zero yards on those three carries. This shouldn’t be a major surprise after Akers suffered a major Achilles injury last off-season and struggled when he came back late in the year. We don’t recommend you drop Akers, but until he makes this into more of a committee, he’s best left on benches.

Week 1 vs. Buffalo Bills

For as good as the Buffalo defense is, they can be susceptible to the run. Ranking 13th in rushing yards allowed and 26th in rushing touchdowns allowed, the Los Angeles Rams could elect to take advantage of this. While the opportunity may be there, it is expected this backfield will be a true committee. Couple this with the fact that Cam Akers is coming off an Achilles injury and a soft tissue injury in camp, and I recommend starting him as an RB3 with RB2 upside.

2022 Fantasy Upside
Cam Akers’ range of fantasy outcomes has a massive variance. The second-round pick from the 2020 NFL Draft made a lightning-fast recovery from a preseason Achilles tear to see the majority of backfield touches during the Rams Super Bowl championship. He is the clear lead back entering the 2021 season on a Los Angeles team with one of the league’s best offenses.

However, his effectiveness last season was disappointing. Akers averaged just 2.6 yards per rushing attempt, and lost two key fumbles in the Divisional Playoff against Tampa Bay. Correctly projecting Akers’ effectiveness could prove critical to a fantasy championship. If his 220-lb frame can still maintain his 4.47 speed, a superior pass-catching profile from Florida State completes the profile of a fantasy RB1.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Recovering from an Achilles tear is difficult, and its possible Akers has lost some explosiveness. Veteran Darrell Henderson still lurks, and could see a bigger role if Akers falters. Still only 23 year old, there is not much NFL success to base an optimistic fantasy projection on.

2022 Bottom Line
The lead running back in the Rams offense is a desirable position, and the Akers uncertainty is already baked into his RB19 ADP. He remains an elite three-down running back behind a solid offensive line and championship-level quarterback. Take advantage of the uncertainty and bet on a big season from the versatile Cam Akers.

LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs New York Jets

Cam. Akers. League. Winner.

What else is there to say about the rookie after his performance last week against the New England Patriots where he had 29 carries for 171 yards and caught 2-of-3 targets for 23 yards. Akers looked downright Gurley-esque in his performance as he ripped off huge chunks of yardage running hard through huge lanes. Now fully entrenched as this team’s workhorse back, it appears Akers will be given every opportunity to touch the football moving forward.

The New York Jets rank 11th in aFPA to RBs this season, however, they are fresh off of surrendering 142 rushing yards to the duo of Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde. As one of the top rushing teams in the league, expect the Rams to run the ball a lot more down the stretch to make their playbook full of play-action more effective. Akers is a low-end RB1 this week.

LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs New England

The Cam Akers breakout is real!
Akers had by far his best game of the season last week against the Cardinals as he ran the ball 21 times for 72 yards and one touchdown. Akers also had a 22-yard reception, but the most important detail of this game was that Akers handled 70% of the RB touches.

Akers should have another solid game this week against the Patriots as New England ranks 21st in aFPA to RBs this season. This seems to have the makings of a perfect storm for patient Akers’ managers given the Rams are ranked 8th in total carries and both Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown have had their workloads reduced. Akers will be a low-end RB2 in this Thursday night game.

LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Arizona

Akers had a solid game last week against San Francisco, as he carried the ball nine times for 84 yards and one touchdown. That now gives Akers consecutive games with touchdowns and his trajectory is heading in the right direction. He still isn’t leading the backfield in touches, but his ability and production have made the possibility of owning the backfield an almost certain reality. For now, keep Akers as an RB2/3 with the expectation for him to take over this backfield outright heading into the fantasy playoffs.

LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at San Francisco

Akers returned to action this past week after missing the previous two games due to a rib injury. Looking as explosive as he did in college, Akers ran the ball nine times for 61 yards, the most efficient running performance of any of the backs on this Rams offense. Playing Akers this week against San Francisco is extremely risky considering the structure of not just the backfield, but the entire offense. It would be best to leave Akers on your bench this week while this RBBC situation gets sorted out.
