Scouting report

NYJ TE Chris Herndon - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
You have to go back to 2018 to see the potential Chris Herndon has in 2020. He had 39 catches for 502 yards and four touchdowns. Not bad for a rookie tight end with a rookie quarterback throwing to him. The most impressive part of Herndon's game was his ability to get downfield which is usually a wide receiver's role.

Fantasy Downside
Herndon played only 18 snaps in 2019 due to suspensions and injuries. He also is a Jet which should worry any fantasy owner about any of New York's players. It has struggled and that affects the skill players, even the ones with a positive track record.

2020 Bottom Line
Herndon was a potential break out candidate last season so that could carry over to 2020. He should get targets on a team that still has a weak receiving corp. His role in fantasy is a low-end TE2 so you he can probably be had in the late rounds for depth. Expect similar stats from his rookie year with a potentially higher ceiling than most backup tight ends.

NYJ TE Chris Herndon - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at New England Patriots

Chris Herndon has six receptions for a season-high 82 yards and also his fourth touchdown of the season last week against Green Bay. He has become a legit target in the passing game for New York and the results have been encouraging for Herndon's future.

He has a great matchup against New England who is 25th in aFPA to tight ends. Herndon has seven receptions in the first meeting with the Patriots and we expect another good one in Week 17. Start him as a solid TE1.

NYJ TE Chris Herndon - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Houston Texans

Chris Herndon has somewhat gotten over the past two games. He has only three catches for 45 yards and he was only targeted eight times over that span. The Jets like Herndon but need to get him more involved which could happen this week.

Herndon will face a very good Texans defense that has struggled with opposing tight ends. Houston only ranks 26th in aFPA to tight ends which means Herndon would be a good option for the Jets offense this week. However, we are still concerned over the lack of production in recent weeks so keep Herndon on the bench for Week 15 as a high-end TE2.

NYJ TE Chris Herndon - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Buffalo Bills

Chris Herndon has been targeted in the passing game more than any Jets player over the past two weeks. He has not put up great numbers, but he does have nine receptions for 88 yards. He has not scored a touchdown since Week 8.

Against the Bills in Week 10, he had three receptions for 34 yards. Buffalo is ranked third in aFPA to tight ends this season so with an unfavorable offense and an inconsistent passing game, sit Herndon even though he is definitely going to see some targets in Week 14.

NYJ TE Chris Herndon - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Tennessee Titans

Chris Herndon was targeted eight times on Sunday which produced seven catches for 57 yards. It was the most targets this season for Herndon who will probably benefit from the veteran QB Josh McCown starting.

It will be a tough matchup for Week 13 as the Titans are No. 1 in aFPA to tight ends. That should put a damper on Herndon's numbers this week. Keep him on the bench as a solid TE2.

NYJ TE Chris Herndon - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. New England Patriots

Chris Herndon continues to be the starting tight end which gives him some fantasy value. He caught three passes for 34 yards his last game. Herndon hasn't had any big games this season and has not scored a touchdown his last two games.

Herndon does have a good matchup as the Patriots are 30th in aFPA to tight ends. But that is still not enough to earn him a start on your team. Keep Herndon on the bench as a solid TE2.

NYJ TE Chris Herndon - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Buffalo Bills

Chris Herndon was held out of the end zone for the first time in three games, but he did have a season-high 62 receiving yards. He has become a nice addition to the Jets passing game and it will be interesting to see if that continues with veteran Josh McCown getting the start for Week 10.

Herndon will face a Bills defense that is ranked 13th in aFPA to tight ends. Although he has put decent numbers up over the last month, Herndon should remain on the bench as a TE2 this Sunday.
