Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (ankle) did not practice Wednesday. The Panthers are hoping Jonathan Stewart is healthy enough to start. If not, Darrin Reaves likely leads a committee that could include Fozzy Whittaker and Chris Ogbonnaya. Whittaker (thigh) did not practice Wednesday.

Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (thigh) took limited practice reps Wednesday. HC Ron Rivera is hoping that Stewart can play with DeAngelo Williams sidelined for a while with a bad ankle sprain (his foot is in a hard cast, not a walking boot). Teams in need of long-term RB help could pick up Stewart since it looks like Williams will be out a while. If Stewart can’t play, then it will be some combination of Fozzy Whittaker, Darrin Reaves and Chris Ogbonnaya.

With DeAngelo Williams shifting from a walking boot to a cast over his sprained ankle, the veteran runner is all but officially out for Sunday's tilt with the Chicago Bears.

Panthers HC Ron Rivera is holding out hope that Jonathan Stewart will take his place after missing Sunday's loss to the Ravens with a knee injury, per ESPN's Ed Werder. Even if he plays, look for Stewart to share time with a combination of Darrin Reaves, Fozzy Whittaker and the newly signed Chris Ogbonnaya.

Fantasy Impact: 

Teams in need of long-term RB help could pick up Stewart since it looks like Williams will be out a while. If Stewart can’t play, then it will be some combination of Fozzy Whittaker, Darrin Reaves and Chris Ogbonnaya in Week 5.

The Panthers didn't waste much time filling their need for a healthy running back.

Carolina signed free-agent running back Chris Ogbonnaya Monday night after cutting Tauren Poole, who was signed last week and fumbled in his first and only carry in Sunday's 38-10 loss to Baltimore.

Ogbonnaya, a fifth-year player, was released by the Browns just before the start of this season. He was drafted in the seventh round of the 2009 draft out of Texas by the Rams.

Ogbonnaya's most productive season came last year for the Browns. He rushed 49 times for 240 yards for an average of 4.9 yards per carry, and he caught 48 passes for 343 yards and a touchdown.

At 6-foot and 220 pounds, he has seen time at both fullback and tailback. Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he was looking for a veteran running back who could help immediately in pass protection while also grasping the playbook quickly.

Fantasy Impact: 

The RB situation not a pretty picture in Carolina. Darrin Reaves could see a lot of work if Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams can't go. Fozzy Whittaker could be next in line along with Ogbonnaya.
