Scouting report

ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at Kansas City Chiefs

Christian Kirk scored the second touchdown of his young career against the 49ers two weeks ago before the bye, finishing the game with three catches and 42 yards. He was targeted seven times though and is second on the team behind only Larry Fitzgerald with 44 targets this season. As a playmaker, it’s good to see him getting looks.

Kirk will face a Chiefs defense that has allowed just the 14th-most fantasy points per game to opposing wide receivers, but is giving up the fifth-most passing yards per game this season. With a game script that will likely force the Cardinals into passing situations, the potential for a big play from Kirk is high. He’s risky, but has some boom-bust value in deep leagues.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. San Francisco 49ers

Christian Kirk led the Cardinals in receiving yards last week but he still only caught three balls for 57 yards. He’s a playmaker in an offense that’s struggling to make plays, giving him upside but also a low floor in any given game. A change at offensive coordinator should help the offense.

This week, Kirk faces a 49ers defense that has struggled all year. The 49ers are allowing the 12th-most fantasy points per game to opposing wide receivers, and only the Falcons, Patriots, and Buccaneers have given up more touchdown passes this season. Still, Kirk is a boom-or-bust option who should only be used in deep leagues by owners thin at the position. He has some sneaky upside, but a ton of risk.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Denver Broncos

Christian Kirk has been one of the few bright spots in the Cardinals offense over the past few weeks, showing a strong rapport with rookie quarterback Josh Rosen. He caught six of seven balls thrown his way last week against the Vikings, gaining 77 yards. He’s a playmaker with the ability to score every time he touches the ball, and if he keeps getting this volume of targets, he could be surprisingly valuable in all leagues.

This week, Kirk will face a Broncos defense that has allowed the tenth-least fantasy points per game to opposing receivers and will likely pressure Rosen all game. Kirk is a big play waiting to happen, so it’s possible he has a good game. However, fantasy owners should be cautious and stash him at the end of the bench for now. A bad matchup for a struggling offense is too risky to bank on.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Minnesota Vikings

Christian Kirk had a nice game last week with 85 yards receiving and a touchdown albeit 75 yards of that was on one play. Kirk is a playmaker though and should continue to be an active part of the Cardinals passing game. Rookie quarterback Josh Rosen seems to be building a nice rapport with him. Kirk is too risky this week against a tough defense, but he’s worth a speculative addition to deep rosters across all fantasy leagues due to his tremendous long-term upside.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Seattle Seahawks

Encouraging for Christian Kirk was the clear comfort level he had with rookie quarterback Josh Rosen last week. Rosen is set to start against the Seahawks this week and he’s looked to Kirk early and often in limited snaps, including a nice touchdown in the preseason.

Kirk isn’t worth giving serious consideration to as a starter this week with question marks surrounding the offense, but fantasy owners in deeper leagues should stash away the talented rookie. He’s a playmaker with the ability to turn any pass into a big play, and he seems to have Rosen’s trust.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - 2018 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

According to the Sports Xchange, Arizona filled two needs by selecting Kirk in the second round. Not only is he a capable wide receiver who can step in and contribute from the slot position right away, but he's also a very dangerous return man on punts and kickoffs. A local Arizona product out of Scottsdale Saguaro High School, where he was named the state's player of the year as a senior, Kirk started as a freshman at Texas A&M and in three seasons there, he caught 229 passes for 2,796 yards and 26 touchdowns. He also scored six other times on punt and kick returns. Adding to the intrigue, at this point the Cardinals have only J.J. Nelson and Brice Butler on the depth chart behind Larry Fitzgerald, so Kirk could see meaningful snaps during his rookie campaign.

Fantasy Downside

Stop me if you've heard this before, but receivers don't always set the world on fire as rookies (although there are clearly exceptions). One additional limiting factor in Arizona would be the presence of David Johnson, a capable enough pass-catcher to serve as the team's de facto WR2.

2018 Bottom Line

His true value will be greater in dynasty leagues, but Kirk is a prospect to watch. He'll be a late-rounder who could easily outproduce expectations, especially with both Sam Bradford and Josh Rosen being accurate passers capable of keeping the Cardinals passing attack moving.
