Update
Clyde Edwards-Helaire's stock shot the roof once Damien Williams announced his intention to opt out of the 2020 season. The Chiefs still have some veterans on the teams including DeAndre Washington and Darwin Thompson, but CEH is the clear benefactor here. Our main concern with CEH was how he'd split time with Williams, but with him gone, CEH has RB1 potential. (7/29)
Fantasy Upside
After a rotation of running backs in 2019, the Chiefs spent a first-round pick on Clyde Edwards-Helaire this season, which is a great landing spot for any rookie (Chiefs finished 5th in total points and 7th in total yards). Rookie running backs, in particular, perform better in their first year than most other positions. Edwards-Helaire is a solid dual-threat back who can thrive on the ground and as a receiver.
Fantasy Downside
Edwards-Helaire enters a backfield that is keeping Damien Williams as an incumbent starter. While the prospects of rookies are fun, Williams has been highly productive in his two seasons with Kansas City. Chiefs GM Brett Veach even said in April that Williams “will come in as the starting running back.” Those comments are especially important this season with no preseason for Edward-Helaire to get comfortable with the pace of a professional league.
2020 Bottom Line
Kansas City’s backfield combined for 400 touches last season, so it wouldn’t be out of the question for Edwards-Helaire to see about half of that. With his talent as a runner and receiver (one team asked him to work out as a wide receiver at the Combine), he should flirt with 1,000 scrimmage yards this season. Edwards-Helaire is an intriguing prospect, but his ADP is a little too high for our liking.
