Scouting report

CHI TE Cole Kmet - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Washington Commanders

Cole Kmet matched D.J. Moore in Week 4 with a team-high nine targets. He turned those targets into his most productive game of the season, finishing 7-85-2. It was a nice outing, but it's important to remember his stat line through the first three games combined this year was 11-104-0. Plus, this week he draws a brutal matchup against the Commanders who have given up the fewest fantasy points to tight ends this year. Washington still hasn't allowed a touchdown and has given up the 4th-fewest receptions and 3rd-fewest receiving yards to the position. Kmet should be viewed in the TE10-TE15 range for Week 5.

CHI TE Cole Kmet - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Denver Broncos

Through three games, Cole Kmet has a combined stat line of 11-104-0. That's obviously not great as Kmet is averaging just 34.7 yards per game with no touchdowns. Although with tight end being such a weird position in fantasy, Kmet is still relevant as the TE16 this season (half-PPR). Kmet doesn't offer much of a ceiling, but his floor seems to mostly be a safe 30 yards or so. Kmet should be viewed around the TE15 range heading into a favorable Week 4 matchup vs. the Broncos.

CHI TE Cole Kmet - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Kansas City Chiefs

Cole Kmet was OK last week as he finished 4-38 on six targets. Kmet has seen 13 targets so far this season which is tied for 3rd-most in the league among tight ends. He hasn't been super productive with those targets, finishing below 50 yards in each game with no touchdowns. But it's at least a promising indication that he'll continue to be focused on in this offense. He gets an OK matchup this week against the Chiefs. We like Kmet as a low-end TE1 option for Week 3.

CHI TE Cole Kmet - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Cole Kmet tied the team lead in targets (7) in Week 1, finishing with five catches for 44 yards. He also had a rushing attempt that went nowhere. It was a decent outing for Kmet considering his 44 yards were more than he had in 13 games last year. And if he can consistently see more than five targets, then he'll start rising up in the ranks. But consistency has always been a problem for Kmet, so we'll see what he can do in Week 2 in a decent matchup vs. the Bucs. We have Kmet around the TE20 range for Week 2.

CHI TE Cole Kmet - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Green Bay Packers

Cole Kmet had somewhat of a breakout season last year as he broke his touchdown curse and ended up finding the end zone seven times. However, outside of those scores, Kmet didn't do a whole lot. He had nine games with 30 receiving yards or less and five of those seven touchdowns came in a three week span. Unless something changes, Kmet should be viewed as a boom-or-bust option at tight end based on whether he scores or not. And for what it's worth, he didn't score in either of his games against the Packers last season, his opponent for Week 1. We have Kmet outside of the top 20 options at TE.

CHI TE Cole Kmet - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Cole Kmet started to find a rhythm last season after a somewhat disappointing 2021 season. From Week 8 on in 2022, Kmet was the fantasy TE4. From Week 8 through Week 17, Kmet scored seven touchdowns while averaging 3.8 receptions for 40 yards. He also saw at least five targets in seven games during that span, which is notable considering how few passing attempts the Bears had as a team.

Fantasy Downside
While Kmet did show some promise in 2022, he scored five of his seven touchdowns in a three game span. And his final two scores came in the final two games of the season when Darnell Mooney was on IR (and Justin Fields was inactive for one of those games). Kmet didn’t score a single touchdown in 2020, and then didn’t score in the first seven weeks of the 2023 season. He’s also not someone who is prone to having big games as he topped 50 yards just three times last season, and finished below 30 yards nine times.

2023 Bottom Line
Kmet isn’t the most productive player, but tight end is a tough position in fantasy. Only one tight end topped 1,000 receiving yards, and only seven had at least 700 yards. Kmet is facing an uphill battle in a run-heavy offense that just added another receiving threat in D.J. Moore. But if he can become a more reliable option in the red zone like he showed at points last season, then he’ll be very valuable. Right now he’s a solid TE2 option that is available later in the draft.

CHI TE Cole Kmet - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Detroit Lions

Cole Kmet led all Bears players in targets last week with six, finishing 5-27-0. Kmet had that weird scoring streak midway through the season, but has now gone scoreless in five consecutive games. However with Darnell Mooney done for the year, and Chase Claypool being inactive lately, Kmet has been Justin Fields' top target. He's not the most productive player, but he usually offers at least something, which is more than a lot of tight ends can say this season. Kmet should be viewed within the TE10-TE15 range for Week 17 as he draws a favorable matchup vs. the Lions (30th aFPA).
