Fantasy Upside
Courtland Sutton broke out big time in 2019 to the tune of 126 targets, over 1100 yards, and six touchdowns. Through 13 weeks in 2019, he was averaging over 15 fantasy points a game but oddly enough he trailed off in 2019 when Drew Lock took over as the starter. Going into 2020 he had very high hopes, only to see those dreams dashed by a torn ACL one game into the season. As we head into 2021, Sutton is coming off a torn ACL and many are hoping he can recapture his 2019 magic when it looked like he was the next superstar wide receiver in the NFL. With Teddy Bridgewater signed as the hopeful new starter, many are excited, because the last time Bridgewater started a full NFL season he supported three top 25 WRs with the Carolina Panthers. After hovering around the league average when it comes to pass/run ratio the past two seasons, many beat writers are speculating that the Broncos could pass more in 2021, which would help the prospects of their pass catchers earn more targets, while also running more plays in 2021.
Fantasy Downside
Courtland Sutton has a big obstacle in returning and that’s proving to fantasy drafters and the Denver Bronco faithful that his ACL tear is a thing of the past. Many WRs returning from ACL injuries have shown some rust and it usually takes about half a year to reacclimate to the NFL game. That could slow his 2021 campaign down and Jerry Jeudy could end up lighting it up if Sutton doesn’t get his legs from under him. In 2019, his last full season, he averaged almost 8 targets a game with Drew Lock, which is a fine number, but he also averaged under 60 yards a game, which prorated to a full season still doesn’t get us to 1,000 yards, and probably doesn’t help him match his draft ADP right now, which is WR30 in Underdog Best Ball drafts or according to our rankings which has him as the WR36 currently.
2021 Bottom Line
Courtland Sutton is an exciting, ascending fourth-year talent at wide receiver, but he comes with a lot of risk. A rehabbed torn ACL, questions at quarterback, and he must fight targets with two ascending talents in their own way, in Noah Fant and Jerry Jeudy. We still don’t know how the targets will shape up since all three of these pass catchers have only played one game together, but according to camp reports and beat writers currently, Sutton looks good, but as we all know practice and game speed are two different animals. Currently ranked as WR36 according to 4for4, it doesn’t take much to find out, but at the same time, many exciting options such as Mike Williams, Antonio Brown, and Will Fuller are all going after him.
