DEN WR Courtland Sutton - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Giants

This week's matchup against the New York Giants will be an interesting one. Vegas currently has this game with the lowest total of the week at 42.5, so Vegas isn't anticipating many fireworks from this game. If Courtland Sutton can avoid James Bradberry, the only corner to have an above-average coverage in 2020 for the Giants, he could end up having a nice day. Bradberry only allowed two WRs to eclipse more than 60 yards in 2020, but with Sutton, all you need is one deep ball to meet value.

DEN WR Courtland Sutton - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Courtland Sutton broke out big time in 2019 to the tune of 126 targets, over 1100 yards, and six touchdowns. Through 13 weeks in 2019, he was averaging over 15 fantasy points a game but oddly enough he trailed off in 2019 when Drew Lock took over as the starter. Going into 2020 he had very high hopes, only to see those dreams dashed by a torn ACL one game into the season. As we head into 2021, Sutton is coming off a torn ACL and many are hoping he can recapture his 2019 magic when it looked like he was the next superstar wide receiver in the NFL. With Teddy Bridgewater signed as the hopeful new starter, many are excited, because the last time Bridgewater started a full NFL season he supported three top 25 WRs with the Carolina Panthers. After hovering around the league average when it comes to pass/run ratio the past two seasons, many beat writers are speculating that the Broncos could pass more in 2021, which would help the prospects of their pass catchers earn more targets, while also running more plays in 2021.

Fantasy Downside
Courtland Sutton has a big obstacle in returning and that’s proving to fantasy drafters and the Denver Bronco faithful that his ACL tear is a thing of the past. Many WRs returning from ACL injuries have shown some rust and it usually takes about half a year to reacclimate to the NFL game. That could slow his 2021 campaign down and Jerry Jeudy could end up lighting it up if Sutton doesn’t get his legs from under him. In 2019, his last full season, he averaged almost 8 targets a game with Drew Lock, which is a fine number, but he also averaged under 60 yards a game, which prorated to a full season still doesn’t get us to 1,000 yards, and probably doesn’t help him match his draft ADP right now, which is WR30 in Underdog Best Ball drafts or according to our rankings which has him as the WR36 currently.

2021 Bottom Line
Courtland Sutton is an exciting, ascending fourth-year talent at wide receiver, but he comes with a lot of risk. A rehabbed torn ACL, questions at quarterback, and he must fight targets with two ascending talents in their own way, in Noah Fant and Jerry Jeudy. We still don’t know how the targets will shape up since all three of these pass catchers have only played one game together, but according to camp reports and beat writers currently, Sutton looks good, but as we all know practice and game speed are two different animals. Currently ranked as WR36 according to 4for4, it doesn’t take much to find out, but at the same time, many exciting options such as Mike Williams, Antonio Brown, and Will Fuller are all going after him.

DEN WR Courtland Sutton - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Pittsburgh Steelers
After missing the opener with a shoulder injury, Courtland Sutton hopes to be ready for Sunday’s contest in Pittsburgh. While rookie Jerry Jeudy and TE Noah Fant were the top pass catchers last Monday in the loss to Tennessee, Sutton is the No. 1 option for Drew Lock and will definitely be an asset to the aerial attack. As long as he’s cleared to play, be sure to start Sutton.

DEN WR Courtland Sutton - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Courtland Sutton vs. Tennessee Titans
After playing together for the final month of the ’19 season, Courtland Sutton and QB Drew Lock plan to have a full year together to spark the offense. Lined up opposite of rookie Jerry Jeudy, Sutton will be the Broncos No. 1 WR. He’s coming off a 72- reception, 1,112-yard season and should eclipse the 1,000-yard plateau again in ’20. Expect Lock to look for his WR often, which means good things for Sutton in the Monday night home opener. He's has been diagnosed with a sprained right AC joint and is day to day, so be sure to monitor his progress.

DEN WR Courtland Sutton - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
In his second professional season, Courtland Sutton led the Broncos with 72 receptions for 1,100 yards and six TDs. He became the 20th WR in the past 10 years to eclipse 1,100 yards in one of his first two professional seasons. After Emmanuel Sanders was traded in the middle of last year, Sutton took over as the Broncos No. 1 WR and will be Drew Lock’s top option in ’20, with rookies Jerry Jeudy and K.J. Hamler expected to be the other starters. With Lock under center for the final five contests, Sutton averaged slightly over four grabs for 56 yards and scored twice.

Fantasy Downside
While the passing game will feature Sutton, the speed presence of Jeudy and Hamler and RBs Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay will all be utilized by Lock. Jeudy, the first-round pick, is a better prospect coming out of college than Sutton was and could take over the top target as the season progresses. Once Sanders was moved, Sutton had very little competition for targets, something that will absolutely change this year. Although he received over 120 looks last year, he was over the century mark only twice and failed to find the end zone during the final four contests.

Bottom Line
Sutton has good height at 6’4” and long arms, which helps him both be able to leap over and outstretch smaller DBs. Despite only two years in the league, the 24-year-old is the Broncos veteran WR heading into the regular season. With a new OC in Pat Shurmur, look for the Denver offense to be more exciting, resulting in another 1,000-yard year for Sutton. We have him as a top-30 WR heading into the regular season.

DEN WR Courtland Sutton - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Oakland Raiders
Last Sunday in the win over the Lions, Drew Lock threw for just 192 yards. On a team-leading 10 targets Courtland Sutton snagged five balls but for only 41 yards, as fellow WRs DaeSean Hamilton and Tim Patrick posted more yardage. It was the second straight week he received 10 looks, however, he hasn’t been in the end zone in three straight contests. In the opening week loss at Oakland Sutton torched the Raiders for 120 yards on seven grabs and is a WR2 play in the rematch at home.

DEN WR Courtland Sutton - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Detroit Lions
In the snowy loss to the Chiefs last week Courland Sutton still posted a decent fantasy outing, leading the team with 79 yards on four grabs. Even though the 10 targets he received were a season-high, in the past four outings he is averaging only 54 yards and has been over the century mark just twice this season. Detroit has the second-worst defense versus the pass, so expect Drew Lock to have a good game, which makes Courtland Sutton a WR2 start.
