Scouting report

HOU TE Dalton Schultz - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Chicago Bears

While Dalton Schultz did run a over 20 routes in Week 1, he was only targeted three times by quarterback C.J. Stroud. The Texans have a lot of mouths to feed in the passing game. Will Schultz drop in the pecking order? The Bears held Titans TEs Chig Okonkwo and Nick Vannett in check in Week 1. Schultz is also dealing with an ankle injury and he missed practice Wednesday so keep an eye on that. For now, Schultz is a TE2.

HOU TE Dalton Schultz - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

The Texans brought back Dalton Schultz this offseason following his 59-635-5 season (on 88 targets). Only Nico Collins (109) saw more targets last season than Schultz. He also did so while missing two games with an injury. Houston is now paying Schulyz $12 million per year. He's going to be involved in the offense and should work quite well in the middle of the field with Nico Collins, Tank Dell, and Stefon Diggs on the outside.

Fantasy Downside

As our John Paulsen notes, Schultz saw four or fewer targets in six of his 15 games played. He also had six games where he caught two or fewer passes, including two games with just one catch. With all the mouths to feed in the passing game, there will be weeks where Schultz is very quiet.

2024 Bottom Line

Schultz will post low-end TE1 numbers at the cost of about TE15. He'll see more of the passing snaps at the position. Brevin Jordan and Cade Stover aren't likely to dig too much into Schultz's production.

HOU TE Dalton Schultz - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Tennessee Titans

Dalton Schultz saw 11 targets and caught eight of them for 61 yards against the Browns. He has at least 50 yards in these last two games since returning from injury. One of them was against the Titans. He has a chance to do damage again this week. With the state of the tight end position in fantasy and Schultz' connection with C.J. Stroud, Schultz is in the conversation as a starting fantasy tight end this week.

HOU TE Dalton Schultz - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Cleveland Browns

Dalton Schultz returned last week after missing two games with a hamstring injury. He caught four passes for 58 yards but didn't see his first of five targets until the second half. Houston started focusing on the run quite a bit with Case Keenum so Schultz's fantasy ceiling could be low as long as he is quarterback, though C.J. Stroud could return. In a tough matchup against the Browns, Schultz is a borderline TE2 this week.

HOU TE Dalton Schultz - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Denver Broncos

Two yards. That's all Dalton Schultz had against the Jaguars last week. That may keep owners from trusting him this week, but keep this in mind: the team allowing the most fantasy points to tight ends? The Broncos. And with six teams on a bye this week, including Minnesota (T.J. Hockenson) and Buffalo (Dalton Kincaid), you could do a lot worse this week than Schultz. He's worth a look as a potential touchdown-scorer this week.

Update: Schultz was ruled out with a hamstring injury after not practicing all week. Bevin Jordan steps in as the top tight end this week.

HOU TE Dalton Schultz - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

It was a quiet Week 10 for Dalton Schultz against the Cardinals, seeing just three targets and coming away with two catches for 32 yards. He did score a touchdown for the fifth time in his last seven games, so when the Texans get to the red zone, Schultz has a pretty good chance to score. The Jaguars are in the middle of the pack against tight ends. It can't get much worse than his 1-9 line in Week 3. Schultz is a solid TE1 this week.

HOU TE Dalton Schultz - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Arizona Cardinals

Dalton Schultz has reached 60 yards in four of his last five games, including the 130-yard outburst in Week 10 against the Buccaneers. With Houston's offense buzzing, with Schultz's connection with C.J. Stroud and with the position still fairly volatile in fantasy, Schultz continues to be a very intriguing option each week. He's a top-10 option this week against a down Arizona defense.
