Scouting report

by Brandon Niles

NYG QB Daniel Jones - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Daniel Jones had an uneven rookie year, but overall looked like a promising young asset with the upside of a franchise quarterback. He finished the season with 3,027 yards and 24 touchdowns to 12 interceptions in 13 starts. He also added 279 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground. Jones will hopefully benefit from a solid offensive line this year, coupled with a healthy supporting cast to start the season.

As good as Jones has looked at times and as much potential as he has for this season, it might be best to look elsewhere for Week 1, if possible. He’s facing the Steelers, who ranked second in the league last year in aFPA points allowed to opposing quarterbacks, and they look like they’re going to be just as stout this year. We have Jones ranked outside QB2 range this week and fantasy owners should bench him if possible in such a tough matchup.

NYG QB Daniel Jones - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Daniel Jones had an uneven, but very promising rookie year. He took over as the starter early in the season and went on to make 12 starts, throw 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The Giants struggled to win with the league’s third-worst defense, but Jones averaged 16.4 fantasy points per game, good for 16th in the league. The Giants don’t look to be significantly better defensively heading into this season, which should allow Jones to continue slinging it and he should benefit from a full season with Golden Tate and – hopefully – Sterling Shepard, who both missed time last year due to suspension and injury, respectively. Jones also should benefit from an offensive line that has been steadily improving over the past few seasons from one of the worst in the league, to one of the upper-third.

Fantasy Downside

Jones’ numbers were a bit inflated by his production in three key games last season, with 13 of his 22 touchdowns against the Lions, Jets and Washington. All three of those games were shoot-outs as well, with negative game script helping him to at least 40 passing attempts. Jones had some nasty games throughout the season, including blowout losses to the Packers and Patriots, where he threw a combined six interceptions. The bet against Jones is basically the opposite of the bet for him. Do you believe in the good parts of his rookie season, or the bad?

2020 Bottom Line

Jones is likely somewhere in between the good and the bad, but if he can continue to show improvement after a promising rookie season, he should sniff QB1 numbers as a sophomore. We have him ranked higher than his 11th-round ADP in 12-team leagues as a fringe starter in 1QB leagues, making him a value-pick for fantasy owners looking to wait at the position. Because it’s likely the Giants will continue to throw the ball – ninth in passing attempts last year – Jones should have a fairly high floor to go with significant upside. He’s a great option at his current ADP.

NYG QB Daniel Jones - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Daniel Jones blew up against Washington last week. In a close victory in overtime, Jones wound up with 352 yards and five touchdowns, while throwing no interceptions. Jones was only sacked once on the day and has actually only been sacked twice in his last three starts after getting beat up for much of the middle of the season. Jones has shown just enough flash to keep Giants fans hopeful for the future, but there are still a lot of questions to answer next season before determining his long-term potential. This week, he has upside coming off a five-touchdown game, but he’s risky against an Eagles defense that wants to win and ranks seventh in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. Outside of a deep-shot option in 2QB leagues, Jones should be left on the bench to close out the season.

NYG QB Daniel Jones - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Washington Redskins

Daniel Jones returns from injury this week in what looks like a good matchup on the surface, but Washington actually ranks 11th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. Jones has some potential and adds a little more pop and mobility to the team than Eli Manning at this stage in his career, but he's still a turnover machine and coming off an injury in a less-than-favorable matchup in what is likely a championship game? No thank you.

NYG QB Daniel Jones - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Philadelphia Eagles

Daniel Jones struggled against the Packers last week, throwing three interceptions and only one touchdown as the Giants got throttled 31-13. Jones is supposed to play this week, but he’s dealing with an ankle issue and is facing an Eagles defense that ranks 13th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks this year. Fantasy owners should look elsewhere if possible, even in most 2QB leagues.

Update: Jones is out, so be sure to remove him from lineups if you were unfortunate enough to have him starting.

NYG QB Daniel Jones - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Green Bay Packers

Daniel Jones threw a pair of touchdowns against the Bears last night but it wasn’t enough to pull out a victory and the Giants fell to 2-9 on the season. He only threw for 150 yards, adding 27 on the ground. Jones hasn’t lit the world on fire this season, but he’s shown promise and he hasn’t thrown a pick for two consecutive weeks. The Giants defense certainly isn’t helping him. Only the Cardinals, Buccaneers and Dolphins allow more points per game this season.

This week, Jones faces a Packers defense that ranks 16th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks, so there should be some room for him to operate. However, the struggles of the offense, in general, makes him risky as anything more than a QB2 option in most fantasy leagues.

NYG QB Daniel Jones - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Chicago Bears

Daniel Jones had a great game against the Jets before the bye last week, throwing for 308 yards and four touchdowns in a close loss. Jones doesn’t have the Giants winning games, but he’s kept them competitive in most outings and his 15/8 TD/Int ratio is pretty good for a rookie. His 208 yards and two touchdowns on the ground buoy his fantasy potential as well.

This week probably isn’t the best time to start Jones, however, as he’ll face a tough Bears defense that stifled Jared Goff a week ago and ranks ninth in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks this season. He’s worth rostering as a second quarterback in most leagues but should really only be active in deep, 2QB leagues in a tough matchup.
