Scouting report

PHI RB Darren Sproles - Week 1, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Cleveland
The last two years under Chip Kelly, Darren Sproles has started strong, appearing as if he's going to pile up the receptions and receiving yards like he once did. However, in those same two years, Sproles has also managed to disappear. There were five games last season where he caught two passes or less and eight games where he caught three passes or less. That's supposed to change this year under new head coach Doug Pederson who doesn't have a lot to work with on offense. So it makes a lot of sense to get Sproles more involved.

Sproles gets a friendly matchup this week and a pretty nice ranking at 36th on our RB list. The Browns were 23rd in allowing fantasy points to RBs. There's always a mystery as to how the Eagles will use Sproles, but owners should have a little more faith in this coaching staff. He's a lower end RB3 play in PPR leagues but Sproles-like backs can often be inconsistent depending on game flow. He's best for a little deeper PPR leagues but this is probably as good a chance to play Sproles as owners may see this season.

PHI RB Darren Sproles - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Darren Sproles can still get it done if given space on the field, be it in the receiving game, a change of pace back or on special teams returning punts. Last year, he caught 55 balls for 388 yards and was targeted 83 times. He was also a key part to a run game that struggled at times. He added three rushing TDs despite the team having DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews as running options. With Murray now out of town, Sproles is easily second on the depth chart behind Mathews, who has had his share of injury issues in his career.

Fantasy Downside
Sproles had eight games where he caught three passes or less. For the type of back he is, that just doesn't make a lot of sense. However, that was typical of the Eagles and Chip Kelly the last few seasons and it's almost as if they were afraid to use Sproles for stretches of the season, which caused his production to dip. He's another year older and has never been the type of back to carry a full load. He went through an early season stretch of getting six touches or less in four of five weeks, so he's going to be limited and inconsistent in that fantasy aspect.

Bottom Line
In the right format, Sproles can have some value. Right now, that's looking like deeper PPR leagues. The hope with this new coaching staff is Sproles gets consistent touches week-to-week so owners have an idea of what to expect, especially for any matchup that is deemed favorable. Outside of deep PPR leagues, Sproles probably won't have consistent fantasy value unless we see more. He's not a true RB2 in that I don't think this coaching staff will give him a full workload outside of a surprise game or two.

PHI RB Darren Sproles - Week 17, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at New York Giants

Darren Sproles saw 12 touches in Week 16, he carried five times for nine yards and caught seven balls for 56 yards.

Sproles has been best suited for deeper PPR leagues this year, and that remains the case this week with his workload perhaps a little bit more of mystery heading into Week 17. Head coach Chip Kelly was fired so it's anyone's guess as to how the workload will be split up among the three backs. Sproles' 10-12 touches should be pretty safe, however, as the offense likely doesn't change a whole lot with only one week go to. As for Sproles' future, the team will see a new coach take over at some point soon, and Sproles is part of a three-headed backfield that's taking up a big chunk of cap space. Sproles will be another year older the team has Ryan Mathews and even Kenjon Barner who are capable pass catchers along with DeMarco Murray.

PHI RB Darren Sproles - Week 16, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Washington
Darren Sproles carried six times for nine yards and added three catches for 16 yards. His fantasy totals and touches have dropped since being heavily involved in Week 13 when he received 19 touches. Sproles appears to be the team's RB2 behind Ryan Mathews now while DeMarco Murray drops farther down the depth chart. Last week the team had to abandon the run game but still didn't look to Sproles all that much in the passing game. It continues to be a mystery how the Birds use Sproles each week and so he's just not a safe play outside of deeper PPR leagues.

PHI RB Darren Sproles - Week 15, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Arizona
Darren Sproles carried seven times for 41 yards and added a TD. He caught just two passes for four yards. In Week 13, Sproles had 19 touches, but it was unlikely that kind of workload would carry over to Week 14. It didn't - and he got nine touches which is right around his yearly average of 8.5 so far this season. Sproles is a bit of a risky play but the Birds do seem committed to getting him more involved in key situations. Ryan Mathews seems to be the safest play of the backs in this three-headed monster. Sproles is more of a RB3 play in PPR leagues.

PHI RB Darren Sproles - Week 14, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Bills

Darren Sproles said he wanted the ball more and got his wish last week helping to lead the Eagles over the Patriots. Sproles carried 15 times for 66 yards and added four catches for 34 yards. His 19 touches were a season high as DeMarco Murray saw just eight touches total.

Ryan Mathews returns this week to crowd the backfield so the chances of Sproles seeing 19 touches again aren't very good. He'll likely be a factor in the passing game and as a change of pace, but he's still a risky play outside of very deep PPR leagues.

PHI RB Darren Sproles - Week 13, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at New England
Darren Sproles carried the ball twice for four yards last week and caught four balls for 21 yards. He's been more involved in the passing game since Week 7 and is averaging just under four catches a game in that same span, but isn't reaching double-digits in overall touches. As a result, he's a risky fantasy play even with Ryan Mathews still in the concussion protocol.
